Using Rope Access for NDT

non destructive testing.jpg

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is the group of processes used to inspect, test and evaluate materials or components for discontinuities without causing damage. NDT is different to destructive tests which are more commonly used to test a sample of materials or components on such elements as their yield, fracture toughness, impact resistance. As NDT does not alter the article being inspected, it is a highly valuable technique that saves both expense and time.

What Are the Benefits of Non-Destructive Testing?

Nowadays, modern NDT is used in manufacturing and inspection to ensure a product's reliability and integrity as well as lowering production costs and maintaining a uniform quality level. Once products, materials or components are in place NDT inspections can be used to ensure the items have the required levels of safety and performance.

Non-destructive testing has a number of benefits including:

  • There is a minimum loss of production time.
  • There are a variety of techniques available which can be tailored to the client's requirements.
  • Products and components can be checked without causing damage.
  • Routine inspections will improve the component's integrity.

Non-Destructive Testing by Rope Access

For complicated access areas such as bridges, wind turbines, oil rig platforms and other difficult to access or confined areas rope access has become the preferred method for undertaking NDT. Often testing will require a quick turnaround and waiting on scaffolding to be erected (and the added expense) is not an ideal solution.

Rope access is a faster and more cost efficient method by which to conduct inspection and maintenance work at height. In some instances, rope access work can be completed in a matter of hours.

Due to advancements in NDT processes more inspection work can be carried out via rope access. It is also the preferred method for situations where the component is in a confined or high angle space where other height access methods simply can't reach. Rope access is the preferred NDT method for many reasons including:

  • Rope access has an excellent safety record.
  • It is more cost effective than other complicated or height access solutions.
  • It requires minimal disturbance.
  • All rope access technicians are assessed and qualified.
  • Rope access can be used in a variety of commercial, industrial and environmental situations.
